UNESCO’S World Heritage City

Ahmedabad has become the first Indian city to be named as a World Heritage city by UNESCO. The World Heritage Committee (WHC) meeting in Poland’s city of Krakow on 8th July 2017 decided to award this honour to Ahmedabad. The WHC citation lauded the peaceful coexistence of Hindu, Islamic and Jain communities in the Gujarat city. WHC also stressed on the fact that Ahmedabad was the centre of non-violent freedom struggle that led to the Independence of India in August 1947.
The State Government of Gujarat has vowed to preserve the walled city and keeping it clean as a matter of pride. The State Government announced that it will develop a tourist circuit joining all heritage structures in Ahmedabad with the areas around the city.
